All You Have to Know about ICD-10 – What is ICD-10

What do you think about how someone classifies any disease? What is the source or a system to determine an illness? I bet, you might think of the WHO. That is right. WHO stands for World Health Organization owns, develops and publishes something like a system to note diseases on health records, and assist in medical reimbursement decisions and track epidemiological trends.

This system called International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The next question is, “Have you ever heard about ICD-10 before?” Some of you may be familiar with this word already, but the others do not. Well now, let me ask you the last question, “What is ICD-10?”. Keep reading, Readers.

ICD which used as a system to classify any diseases has some versions such as ICD-6, ICD-7, ICD-8, ICD-9, and ICD-10. On the other hand, ICD-10 is the tenth version of International Classification of Diseases. This system gets some revisions and expansions as a year and year. The ICD contains codes diseases, signs and symptoms, complaints, abnormal findings, social circumstances and external causes of injury of diseases.

ICD-10 codes offer so many more classification options compared to those found in the previous version, ICD-9. This code set provides more than 14.400 different codes and allow the tracking of many new diagnoses. These codes even can be expanded to over 16.000 codes by using optional sub-classifications.

Mostly, ICD-10, in the U.S., split into two systems called ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. The CM stands for Clinical Modification for diagnostic coding and the PCS stands for Procedure Coding System for inpatient hospital procedure coding. Each systems of ICD-10 have many more codes also than the previous one.

Let me give you an example about the expansion codes of ICD-10. Let me put this way; imagine that there is a patient who broke a wrist. If we check in ICD-9, it does not tell us the specification whether it was the left one or the right one. However, if we use ICD-10 system, it will definitely offer either option even it presents additional details on how an injury of disease is progressing or healing. This ICD-10 helps so much in the medication.

To know more about these codes of ICD-10, the WHO has provided detailed information online. Meanwhile, as I wrote in the upper line, this system is expanding by the WHO.
