Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has another name called benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP). Both of them are same. This disease refers to prostate. Before we discuss more about this BPH, let us remind you about prostate of men itself.

What Does Prostate Do?

Most men do not really know about the prostate. Some people used to say prostate as a name of disease. Men have prostate but sometimes, there is a problem with it. Prostate is a small gland. It is a part of male reproductive system. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Specifically, it surrounds part of the urethra which is the tube in penis that carries pee from bladder. Prostate helps making some of the fluid in semen. The prostate can become larger as you age expands.

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

As I said above that BPH is an enlargement of the prostate. As you know, prostate can be larger normally but BPH happens when there is a noncancerous increase in size of the prostate. This BPD refers to urinating problem. It is because as the prostate gets bigger, it may squeeze or block the urethra.

What are the Causes of BPH?

Something that you have to know is that BPH is not cancer. It usually happens to an older man. Studies found that there are about 90% of men over age of 85 will have BPH. It is kind of a normal part of the aging process in men mostly caused by changes in hormone balance and in cell growth.

What are the Symptoms of BPH?

Urinary problems that you will experience such as:

  • Feeling like you need to urinate even wake you up at night.
  • A weak urine stream.
  • Trouble getting urine stream started and completely stopped.
  • A sense that your bladder is not completely empty after urinate.
