The ICD-10 Code, Causes and Treatment of Shortness of Breath

The most important system for us is respiratory system. This system helps us so much. Unfortunately, there are some problems with respiratory system occasionally. One of them is shortness of breath. Shortness of breath happens when you feel like you cannot get enough air to your chest and you feel tight. This feeling is sometimes becoming worse when you are physically active or when you lie down fat. Keep reading to know more about shortness of breath causes, the ICD code of it and the treatments.

There is a system to diagnose a disease that is used internationally. This system called ICD. ICD stands for International Classification of Diseases. ICD includes so many diagnosis codes and it has been expanding from year to year. The version that people used recently is the 10th revision (ICD-10). Code diagnosis of ICD-10 shortness of breath is R06.02. This system includes several chapters. The ICD-10 shortness of breath code is found in chapter 18, symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings (R00-R99). The code of ICD-10 shortness of breath is in section R00-R09 and lied in category R06 (abnormalities of breathing).

The shortness of breath can be accompanied by some others symptoms such as high fever, chills and cough, lips or fingertips turning blue, swelling in your feet and ankles, trouble breathing when you lie flat, wheezing (abnormal whistling type sound when you breath in or out, and breathlessness that does not go away after 30 minutes of rest.

Then, you maybe have a question like, “What are the causes of my shortness of breath?” Well, let us talk about the causes. This discomfort condition can be caused by many things, including the following:

  • Asthma
  • Heart failure
  • Panic attacks
  • Allergic reaction
  • Low blood pressure
  • Pneumonia
  • Anemia
  • Heart attack
  • Foreign object inhaled into the lungs
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs)

The next question that you might want to know is, “What can we do to improve breathing?”. Of course this question is same as asking for the treatment of shortness of breath disease. First, you should go to see a doctor if you experience any shortness of breath as we discussed above. Then, your doctor will treat the cause of the breathing problem. Thing that you can do to help the treatment from your doctor is to stop smoking if you are a smoker.
