What is Digestive System?

Digestive system is a system that helps the body to digest food. Any food and drink that we consume must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients then the blood will absorb and carry them to cells throughout the body. Because of that, digestion is so important. Digestion is breaking down food into nutrients that the body uses for growth, energy and cell repair. There are some types of diseases that attack this important system such as gallstones, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Specifically, we are going to discuss about irritate bowel syndrome (IBS) which is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder. IBS can cause bouts of stomach cramps, diarrhea, or bloating. Irritate bowel syndrome (IBS) is listed in the International Classification of Diseases, tenth version (ICD-10). ICD-10 IBS diagnosis code is K58.9. The code of ICD-10 IBS comes from a group of classification as follow:

  • Diseases of digestive system (K00-K93)
  • Other diseases of Intestines (K55-K64)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (K58)

What are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of IBS vary between individuals and affect some people more severely than others. Usually, the symptoms include:

  • Bloating
  • Gassiness
  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Altered bowel habits (diarrhea and constipation)

Mostly IBS happens without diarrhea but some cases showed this could be with diarrhea called IBS-D. The symptoms of IBS-D are:

  • Loose stools
  • Frequent stools
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Sudden urges to have bowel movements
  • Nausea
  • Being unable to completely empty bowel

What are the Causes?

Actually, the cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. Most experts thought that it is related to increased sensitivity of the gut. The most cause that is believed related to IBS is psychological factors such as stress.

How IBS is treated?

Most diseases attacked because of the bad lifestyle. So, mostly, the way to overcome disease is to change to your lifestyle and diet. Some things that you can try are:

  • Alter the amount of fibre in your diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Reduce your stress level
  • Identify and avoid foods and drinks that trigger your symptoms

One thing that is very important to remember is about your psychological. Having stress in your life can attract more dangerous disease than IBS. So, make sure that you can control your stress level in every condition of your life.
