Having too much sugar in the blood is awfully scary. It can lead us to a serious health condition such as diabetes. When a person is diagnosed as diabetes patient, they will take some medications, diet and exercise. That will help them so much, but it has side effects. Common medications used to treat diabetes mellitus like insulin and sulfonylureas are the most common cause of hypoglycemia. Someone with hypoglycemia is someone who does not have enough sugar in their blood to use as fuel.

If you feel several of those early symptoms, you have to treat it properly. Without any treatment, you may feel the severe symptoms such as poor coordination and concentration, passing out, numbness in mouth and tongue, nightmares or even coma.

The first thing to do is to know the diabetes drugs which are linked to hypoglycemia. The drugs are insulin and sulfonylureas such as Amaryl, Glucotrol, Micyonase, Gylburide and else. Then you also have to know some things that can worsen your condition like when you drink alcohol without eating any food or you eat later than usual. It is good for you to do not skip meals even though you have diabetes especially if you are also taking the diabetes medications.

Then you have to do something as the first aid if you have low blood sugar. The easiest way to help you is by eating or drinking 15 grams carbohydrate such as:

  • Three glucose tablets
  • One tube of glucose gel
  • 1/2 cup fruit juice
  • 1 cup skim milk
  • Four to six pieces of hard candy
  • ½ cup soft drink

Then, people with hypoglycemia should not forget to check their blood sugar fifteen minutes after they have eaten a food with sugar intake. If you find that your sugar blood is less than 70 mg/dL, take some carbohydrate meals that are listed above.
