Foods that Worsen Urinary Retention and Urinary Retention ICD-10

Have you ever felt like you cannot empty the bladder? This feeling could be a serious health condition. An inability to completely empty the bladder is called as urinary retention. It can be acute and even chronic if you do not take an action suddenly after feeling some symptoms. The symptoms of this disease are inability to urinate, painful or discomfort in the lower abdomen, etc.

Food definitely will affect the condition, either make it better or make it worse. Here are some kinds of foods that worsen your urinary retention.

  1. Acidic and Spicy Food

The urinary retention patients are highly suggested to do not consume acidic and spicy foods. Spicy foods include hot peppers, curry, chili sauce and powder that can worsen your condition. Meanwhile, acidic foods include citrus and juice, pineapple, vinegars and tomato.

  1. Caffeinated Foods and Drinks

If you have urinary retention, make sure that you avoid all kinds of caffeinated foods and drinks such as chocolate, coffee and tea. A study found that caffeine may worsen the patients’ symptoms and limiting your intake of caffeine to 100 milligrams a day may reduce symptoms effectively.

  1. Constipating Foods

Constipation can cause urinary retention. So, you’d better avoiding foods that cause constipation including foods that improve bowel movements to help your condition. The constipating foods you may avoid are hot dogs, white bread, french fries and any other fast food. Instead, consume high-fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables. In addition, make sure that you have to follow your schedule to eat because skipping meals may also increase risk of constipation.

  1. Artifical Sweeteners

Artifical sweeteners will worsen your condition. Artifical sweeteners may cause your symptom like feeling discomfort and pressure in the lower abdominal area. A study in 2006 had found that these sugar increases bladder contractions in rats but human studies are highly needed. But it will not be wrong if you avoid this kind of food.
